The samples must be sent to a research reactor to be irradiated with thermal neutrons in order to induce fissions in 235U and generate induced traces. This makes it possible to determine the total uranium content of the sample, which is essential for the study of fission traces.

Currently, these irradiations are performed at the FRM II reactor in Munich, Germany, which entails high costs and long transport and waiting times, in addition to relying on the cooperation of a foreign institution for a critical part of the procedure.

From the very beginning, La. Te. Andes S.A. has been committed to ensuring that the entire process takes place in Argentina. To that end, concrete steps are being taken to conduct the irradiation at the RA-3 reactor in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is equipped with a horizontal thermal column that would meet the irradiation requirements and would be available for our irradiation needs. After irradiation, the samples remain in the reactor long enough for their activity to decay to levels safe for transport and handling.

On July 26, a visit was made to the reactor to familiarize ourselves with the facilities and, most importantly, to deliver the first batch of apatites prepared by the members of La. Te. Andes in Heidelberg, specifically designed for irradiation in the reactor. This batch consists of reference samples that will be used to verify and/or calibrate this stage of the process. The visit was attended by Geologist Roberto Hernández, Geologist Juan Ignacio Hernández, Dr. Ernesto Cristallini, and Geologist Sofía Bordese, representing La. Te. Andes; Dr. Ulrich Glasmacher as the laboratory advisor from the University of Heidelberg; and Dr. Jorge Quintana and the reactor’s technical team. We look forward to the results!!

One of the intermediate steps in the study of fission traces involves irradiating geological samples in a nuclear reactor.
